Headlight Restoration in Vaughan

Cloudy, yellowed headlights restored in your driveway in Vaughan and Woodbridge. Clearer output and a sharper front end. From $70.

Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate, not glass. Polycarbonate is tough and light, which is why it replaced glass, but it is also vulnerable to ultraviolet light — so from the factory it carries a thin protective coating on the outside. That coating is what fails. Years of sun, road grit and washing wear it away, and once it is gone the plastic underneath starts to oxidise: first a faint haze, then the familiar yellow-brown cloudiness.

It is one of the few faults that ages a car visually more than anything else on the front end. A vehicle can be immaculate everywhere and still look tired if the lenses have gone yellow, because headlights sit at eye level on the face of the car.

It is not only cosmetic

A hazed lens scatters light instead of directing it. The bulb behind it is working exactly as hard as it always did, but a good share of that output is being diffused inside the lens rather than thrown down the road where you need it. The practical result is a dimmer, less defined beam — which is worth more on a badly lit concession road in February than it is in a parking lot.

Restoration removes the oxidised layer of plastic and brings the lens back to clarity. It is genuinely restorative rather than cosmetic cover-up: the haze is not being painted over, it is being taken off.

What it costs

Headlight Restoration

Priced to the pair and to how far the oxidation has gone. Lightly hazed lenses sit at the bottom of the range; heavily yellowed ones that have been left for years take more work and sit at the top.

Booked with a detail

Headlight restoration is an add-on, so it is most often booked alongside one of the three packages rather than on its own. A Silver exterior detail starts at $185 for a sedan or coupe, and the restoration is added to that.

Done at your home, and kept that way

This is a service that suits mobile work particularly well, because it is contained to the front of the car and needs no facility. We arrive fully equipped with our own water and power supply — there is nothing you need to set up and nothing to lend us. We work where the vehicle is parked, at your home or your office, across Vaughan, Woodbridge, Kleinburg, Maple, Concord, Thornhill, King City, Nobleton and Richmond Hill. Condos and apartments are fine as long as we have reasonable access to the vehicle and a spot to work in.

Afterwards, the enemy is the same one that caused it: ultraviolet light. A car that lives outside in full sun will haze again sooner than one that is garaged or parked in shade, and that is worth knowing before you decide how often this is a job worth doing.

If the rest of the front end is looking tired too, restoration is usually booked alongside a package — the lenses tend to be the most visible symptom of a car that has been through several winters without much attention rather than the only one.

Headlight restoration questions

Why do headlights go yellow in the first place?

The lenses are polycarbonate, and polycarbonate degrades in ultraviolet light. From the factory they carry a thin protective coating to prevent that. Years of sun, road grit and washing wear the coating away, and once it is gone the plastic underneath oxidises — first as a haze, then as yellow-brown cloudiness.

Will restoration make my headlights brighter?

It restores the clarity of the lens, so more of the light the bulb is already producing gets directed down the road instead of being scattered inside a hazed lens. It does not change the bulb or the wiring — if the bulb itself is failing, that is a different job.

Is this permanent?

No. Restoration removes the oxidised layer of plastic, but ultraviolet light is what caused the problem and it does not go away. A vehicle parked outside in full sun will haze again sooner than one that is garaged or parked in shade.

Can you fix condensation or cracks inside the lens?

No. Restoration works on the outer surface of the lens. Moisture inside the housing or a cracked lens is a sealing or replacement issue rather than a detailing one, and we will tell you if that is what we are looking at rather than take the booking.

Can I book this on its own?

It is listed as an add-on and is most often booked alongside one of the three detailing packages, which start at $185. Ask us about it on its own and we will tell you straight whether it is worth a trip for your address.
